Sunday 15th
After an exciting meeting of who’s who, and Charles’ famous Tibbits schpeal, it was time to get the Little Women ball rolling! We circled-up our chairs in the gym and did a read through of the script. Since the music is so tremendous in this show, we listened to the original cast recording when it was time for a song. Usually, when a show is familiar it’s not hard to sing a long with the piano during the initial read though, but with such a new and demanding score, it would have been quite difficult and not as enjoyable. We also got a chance to focus on the lyrics and their implication to the story.
The most exciting thing about a read through is experiencing the magic of what began as words on a page, come to life. Everyone had such a great sense of character, which is as refreshing as necessary when you only have 10 days to perfect a show! Also, most of us have never worked together before. We’re all coming from Anywhere,
And to top off our first day— a lovely and delicious picnic only made more thrilling by a surprise thunderstorm! Talk about instant bonding!

We saw the production last night besides being long, the lead actress could not sing. We had patrons behind us that actual get up and left during the intermission.
ReplyDeleteI saw the show opening night and thought it was lovely. It is so true to the book and the cast brought so much life to the characters. I thought the lead did a great job bringing the depth and range of emotion of Jo. It IS long but I don't know of anything I would have wanted to cut. I recommend seeing it, especially if you love the book.

ReplyDeleteI'm not sure what show Linda2 was at, because I think the singing was quite lovely by all actors and actresses--and I was there that night that she described.
ReplyDeleteThe show doesn't *feel* that long, as the story moves quite fast, and there are no lengthy scene changes.
I encourage everyone to come see this show--it's a MUST-see!
